Hitachi Hard Disk Data Recovery Problems

Hitachi LifeStudio Desk Plus 1TB
I am a once-proud owner of a Hitachi LifeStudio Desk Plus (1TB capacity), which I bought a couple of years ago. I have used it in conjunction to my Sony Vaio E-series laptop since I bought the external drive. This year, I upgraded my Windows from a 64-bit XP to a Windows 8 64-bit system since then, I’ve had problems with the Desk Plus. It gets detected (sometimes!) and it lights up when connected but I can’t access the data. From then, I’ve only been able to consistently access the data from the data I have stored on the USB stick. The main hard drive, I am able to get to access it maybe half the times WHEN it does get detected by my Vaio.

Hitachi LifeStudio Desk Plus 2TB
Hi everyone! I’ve been loving my Lifestudio Desk Plus, I purchased the 2TB version and what makes it unique is the magnetically connected USB stick that allows me to transfer some of my work files between work and home computer without having to lug around the larger drive. (I have successfully dropped a couple of perfectly good hard drives on the floor that way – just gifted with butterfingers, I guess). Anyway, about a couple of months ago, the magnetic connection between the stick and the HDD started malfunctioning. The stick doesn’t get detected anymore and the Desk Plus has been transformed to just another normal external hard drive. I don’t seem to have done anything different to it, other than the usual transfer from my work computer and my home computer and the occasional plug into a colleague’s computer. I have never dropped either one and have always properly disconnected the stick (from the hard drive) and the hard drive from the computer.
