The Laptop Was Done. The Disk Was Not.
The MacBook went quiet on a Tuesday evening. By ten it was upside down on a kitchen table in Thatcham, base off and all ten screws in a saucer: nothing at the magnetic connector, no chime at start-up, and I have tried two different chargers and it responds to neither
. Mid teacher training, with a placement portfolio due before the end of the month and no intention of paying anybody to write him an estimate, he had a teardown guide propped up beside him and the Toshiba 500GB out before midnight — what I need is on that disk, not in the laptop itself

What actually caused it.
Storage sits at the end of the power chain, not along it, so a machine that ignores two chargers is telling you about its charging circuit and nothing else. The disk in it has simply had no power. His reasoning was right, and acting on it had already saved him a repair bill. That left one genuine unknown — thirteen years of near-daily running — and wear is measurable rather than arguable, so it was measured first, at no charge, before he was told anything at all.

What the bench did.
Thirteen years buys a disk no benefit of the doubt
There was no USB caddy anywhere in this. Questions were put to the disk at firmware level, where a drive cannot flatter itself: SMART log, reallocation counters, grown defect list, then test reads worked inward from the outer tracks. Everything came back dull — a few remapped sectors, timings that held steady, and a mechanism in rather better shape than its owner had assumed.
Sound media gets the same protection
A healthy disk gets handled exactly as a failing one does. In this condition the write blocker adds no measurable time to the job, and it answers anything asked afterwards: the drive went home in the state it arrived in, and there is a log to show it.
Everything else is done on the copy
UFS Explorer opened the HFS+ volume straight from the image: names, folder tree and dates all as he had described them on the telephone. The MacBook itself was never touched again, because there was nothing left on it worth touching.
What went back.
Portfolio and placement evidence were in his hands a fortnight clear of the deadline. Repairing a charging circuit is somebody else's trade, and we said so. The Toshiba has now been tested, its condition is on record, and it does the lighter work of holding a second copy. He knew the number in advance: one drive, £300 + VAT, published.
