The symptom · it never appears

Hard drive not detected, Reading. Invisible is not erased. The fault is a circuit, not your data.

Three questions, in this order, will tell you which part has failed. Does the BIOS show the drive? Is it listed in Disk Management? Does Explorer open it? The stage where it drops out names the broken component — electronics, firmware, or the volume — and none of those three is where your files live. Fixing the electronics

A shorted TVS diode is desoldered and a fresh one fitted. If the board itself is beyond saving, a donor stands in — but your own ROM chip transfers across to it, because the adaptive values burned into that chip were measured against your platters and fit no other drive.

As soon as the drive answers, the sector-by-sector copy is taken. All the work that follows happens on that copy, while your drive sits on a shelf, untouched.

You see the file list first, then decide. Nothing is invoiced until you have said yes, and on most jobs there is no fee at all if the data does not come back. What goes wrong most often

  • Each stage points at a different component — a drive may stop at the BIOS, get as far as Disk Management and stall there, or appear in Explorer and still not mount. Working out which of the three you have does most of the diagnosis.
  • The TVS diode is meant to fail — it shorts the rail on purpose and takes the spike itself, which is precisely why a drive that will not power up usually has platters in perfect order.
  • Matching model numbers prove nothing — each set of platters has its calibration figures written into the ROM on its own PCB, so a donor board still carrying the chip it came with is tuned to somebody else's drive.
  • Flash has its own version of this — a controller that has stopped, or firmware refusing to load, sitting between you and NAND with nothing whatever wrong with it. A WD Blue SA510 showing 0MB is the everyday example. SSDs have a page of their own.

Worth holding on to: nearly every drive that turns up invisible to its computer has an electronic or a firmware fault. Both of those exist to handle introductions between disk and computer; neither is where your documents sit. A drive that will not appear is reporting on its own hardware and nothing else — which is why this particular fault comes good more often than most, and why the assessment that tells you which it is costs nothing.

The TVS diode did its job, and the WD stopped turning

The mains failed overnight, and by morning the desktop listed one disk where two had been. The WD sat silent, with no BIOS entry to its name, and the fault was the TVS diode on its board. Its own ROM went onto a donor PCB, and two days after the parcel got here the complete image was off.

Answers before you commit to anything.

It is completely silent. Is anything recoverable?

Usually, yes. A failed board is repaired or replaced, and whatever stopped it seldom reaches past the electronics into the platters or the NAND sitting behind them. Of everything that arrives here, a drive showing no sign of life at all is among the more predictable jobs.

Windows wants to initialise the disk. Should I let it?

Never. That box writes a blank partition map straight over the one recording where your files are. Say no, unplug it, and have an engineer see the drive before anything else does.

There is no entry in the BIOS. Is it finished?

No. When the BIOS finds nothing, what the disk has lost is its means of introducing itself — not the material written on it. The fault lies either in the electronics or in the firmware kept in the service area, and neither of those places is where your files live.

There was a power cut and it stopped. Connected?

Very probably. A protection diode takes the spike; it is fitted to short out and fail ahead of everything behind it. So what you have lost is electronics, and what you saved is where it always was.

Nothing gets worse while it sits switched off.

You pay nothing for the look. What comes back is a list — the files that opened, the ones that did not, and one fixed figure to finish the job. Leave it switched off until you have that in writing.
