Electronics — a real repairA disk showing no sign of life at all has usually lost its board — a TVS diode shorted, electronics blown, a USB bridge chip that stopped answering. All three are repairs in the everyday sense of the word, and they are the cheapest news this bench ever gives anybody.
Firmware — repairable, with the kitCorrupt the translator, or damage a single module in the service area, and a disk in perfect mechanical health will announce 0GB — or drop off the bus altogether. Purpose-built hardware reaches structures at that level. No download gets near them.
Mechanics — one sweep, then doneFreeing a seized spindle, fitting a donor stack, lifting heads that have settled onto a surface — each of those buys exactly as much working life as one complete copy requires, and no more. The mechanism is not meant to outlive the job it was woken for.
The board swap stopped working years agoEach mechanism is measured once, on the production line, and those figures sit in a ROM soldered to the board that came with it. Fit a board off another drive and the heads report noise, not data. Your ROM has to travel, which means a soldering iron and a programmer.
