Common threads across the seven
- Only two of the seven say what type of hardware the data was on: an SD card containing recent wedding shoots, and a hard drive taken from a notebook in the last semester of a degree. Both have a page of their own on this site: camera and SD cards, and disks lifted out of laptops. The other five describe what was lost (documents, photographs, sensitive data wanted urgently) but never mention the device at all.
- They were sent in from seven towns: Watford, Mortimer, Hayes, Southampton, Stevenage, Wargrave and Slough, one customer each. Those are the towns the customers gave, recorded as they were given. Because the media comes by post to the Oxford intake lab, it has never mattered where the parcel was handed in.
- Nobody puts a number of days on it: the one customer writing about timing says only how fast things went and that the frequent updates put his mind at ease while he waited. Another says the data was urgently needed. None of them gave a date or a timeframe, so none are shown here.
- Only one reference to money in the entire set: documents back “at a price I can afford”. None of the others mention cost, and none of the seven has a star rating, because none was ever given one.
- What was at risk, in their own words: a wedding job no insurance policy covered, the last semester of a degree, urgent sensitive information, and photographs saved after the Mac Store passed the name on. The words they use are “vital”, “precious” and “extreme frustration”.
Plainly put: none of us wrote any of that. Nothing was purchased, nothing was staged with a stock photograph, and none of the tidying that review sites do has happened. One reviewer wrote “a SD card” and capitalised Photographer. Another capitalised Notebook. A third started a sentence with “And”. A fourth signed off with “engineers, accounts etc!”. A fifth called the firm “Reading Data Recovery Company”. All of it was left exactly as typed. We ask the same of you when your job closes: two or three honest sentences, along with your town if mentioning it doesn't bother you.
