The fault · a drop or a knock

Dropped hard drive recovery, Reading. The fall took a second; what it left behind does not.

Leave it unplugged. Whether the drive was turning at the moment it fell decides almost everything that follows. Switched off, a hard disk takes a fall far better than people assume: the heads are parked off to one side and the chassis absorbs the landing. Spinning, there is no margin at all: platters at 5,400 or 7,200rpm, a head riding nanometres above them and nowhere for it to go. Which is why the impulse to plug it in and check is the one to resist. After a fall, the first spin-up is often the last clean pass the disk has left in it, and a test spends it. What those G ratings mean for a dropped drive.

Parked, or spinningManufacturers broadly agree on the shape of this: a notebook unit will take something near 350 to 400G while it is running, and two and a half to three times that, about 1,000G, once parked. The fall is identical in both cases. Only the amount the mechanism can absorb changes.
When a head settles on the surfaceKnock a drive while the platters are turning and the heads come down onto them and bounce. Every touch is another chance to scratch the magnetic film — and the film is where your files physically live.
The desktop drive is the fragile oneDesktop mechanisms of 3.5" are commonly quoted at about ~30G while running, which is no more than a firm thump on the desk they stand on. People ring insisting they hardly touched the machine, and with a tower under a desk that is usually true.
Dropped sticks and SSDsThere are no moving parts in a WD My Passport SSD, nor in an ordinary USB stick, so a fall heavy enough to finish a hard disk leaves both of them working. Where one has stopped, look to the solder: a cracked joint, a connector pulled away from the board, or a damaged PCB. All three are repairable.

Nothing gets switched on

An engineer goes over the drive by hand first; only then does anything get powered. A head knocked out of line can be down on the surface within one revolution of the first spin-up. Where a drive does have to be turned, it gets a single rotation, watched.

Setting the mechanism right

The damaged head stack comes out and a donor matched to your drive takes its place. A seized spindle is freed, any head sitting on a platter is lifted clear, and repairs are made to boards and sockets.

What goes wrong most often

  • Running or parked decides it — two shock ratings hundreds of G apart, printed on one datasheet, for one drive.
  • Every attempt costs something — switch it on again after a fall and damaged heads take another sweep across the surface. That is the argument for letting a bench do the first spin-up rather than a desk.
  • Quiet is not the same as healthy — a head knocked slightly off true will often behave itself for a fortnight before stopping for good.
  • Travel is designed into a 2.5", and out of a 3.5" — one was built for a rucksack, a bus and a crowded train. The other was built for a desk it never leaves.

What the datasheets show: notebook mechanisms of 2.5" are usually rated somewhere near ~350–400G while running and about ~1,000G once parked, while certain 3.5" desktop units, platters turning, are quoted as low as ~30G. Shutting a machine down before you move it costs nothing, and no other advice on this page is worth as much.

Answers before you commit to anything.

Can a dropped drive still be read?

Usually, as long as nobody has already chanced their arm with it. Nobody is trying to make the mechanism serviceable again; it needs to hold together for one slow read and no longer. In goes a donor head stack of the right model and batch, the imaging is taken gently, and most of the surface generally comes off.

It was plugged in when it went over. How much does that matter?

More than anything else on this page. Powered down, the same fall is a much smaller problem. A head riding nanometres over a spinning platter has no room to give, and it can score the coating on the way. So leave it unplugged.

Can a dropped SSD be damaged?

Not often. With nothing moving inside, the damage falls on the board: a torn-off connector, a split solder joint. That is bench electronics, and it is repairable. Your files live on flash chips, and those usually come through the fall untouched.

It ran for a week, then stopped. Was that the fall?

Almost certainly. Knock a head or a bearing a fraction out of true and every spin-up takes it a little further. The fall decided the outcome; each start since has brought it nearer.
