The two things nobody can undo later are a hopeful press of the power button on a damp drive, and a fortnight in a drawer while salts dry hard onto the pins. How far in the water and smoke damage goes.

How far the water getsHardly ever the platters: sealed away, they read normally afterwards. Damage lands on the parts outside that seal — board, connector, contact strip — every one of them cleanable or replaceable.
What the heat damagesThe circuit board, first and mainly. Platters come through temperatures that have already dealt with plastics and solder. Off comes the failed board, on goes a donor, and the ROM chip from your own board is transferred to it.
Mains, dirty water, salt waterA split mains pipe is the mild case. Water that has been across a floor is worse: silt, and whatever it picked up on the way. Salt is the hard one, since chloride does not stop at the board — it goes for the coating. Whichever it was, the drive travels damp in a sealed bag.
Soot brings a second roundSmoke does its damage on the way down, settling an acidic, abrasive film into every vent and seam. Turn a drive over in that state and the grit gets dragged across surfaces it should never touch. So: clean first, and keep power a long way back in the queue.

Damp is how we want it to arrive — the bag opened on the bench should still be wet inside. Dry it on the way and whatever the water was carrying crystallises hard onto the contacts. Heat and smoke jobs travel differently: untouched, soot and all.

You see the file list first, then decide. Nothing is invoiced until you have said yes, and on most jobs there is no fee at all if the data does not come back. What we pull off goes onto media bought in for your job, and the postage home is ours. The case stays open on the bench until you tell us the files open on your own machine.

What goes wrong most often

  • A weekend does not pause it — corrosion keeps working on Saturday and on Sunday. A drive left on a worktop from Friday has had three days of it by Monday. Get it into the post damp.
  • One hopeful power-up will double the bill — the short finishes the board, and whatever gets past it lands on the preamplifier in the head stack. That is the difference between a wash and a new board, and a job where the drive has to be opened and re-headed.
  • Water comes in grades — from a split mains pipe it is the mildest kind. Water that has crossed a floor brings silt and whatever else it collected. Salt is the grade that goes for the coating. All three should be posted damp.
  • Heat works through in a helpful order — the solder and the plastics are gone well before an alloy body is. So the work becomes a shopping list: replace every part that has a price on it, and protect the single part that has none.

Very little of this work is dramatic. A pipe split behind kitchen units, a washing machine that emptied itself overnight, a radiator letting go in a storeroom over a closed weekend, a drive carried out of a house fire and posted the same afternoon. Ordinary jobs, and most of them go home as ordinary jobs. What separates those that do from those that do not is settled before the parcel lands: whether somebody reached for the power, and how many days passed between the damage and the postbox. Neither is fixable on the bench.

Twenty years of family photographs came home because of two things nobody did: nobody switched it on to check, and nobody tried to dry it out. Sealed in a bag and still wet, it was posted that afternoon. On the bench the pads were cleaned and the ROM was read across to a donor board, and the full image came off on day four.

  • Switch off at the wall and take the plug out — laptop, desktop or NAS alike
  • Seal it into a bag while it is still wet
  • Say which water it was: mains, dirty, or salt
  • Post it today; the corrosion is already under way

  • Rice, which never reaches the water that matters, while each day in the tub is another day corroding
  • A hairdryer, a radiator, the airing cupboard, a low oven
  • Connecting it up for a quick test
  • Rinsing it, wiping the soot off, taking it apart

Answers before you commit to anything.

Can a soaked drive still be read?

Most of the time, yes. Water kills the circuit board, and a board is a stock part. What it never reaches is the sealed chamber where the platters turn. Two conditions decide the job: that nobody pressed the power button while the thing was still damp, and that it got here fast.

Will a bag of rice do anything?

It does not, and it adds two problems of its own. Rice sheds starch dust and fine grit, and both find their way into the contacts. Meanwhile the days a drive spends sitting in a bowl are days corrosion runs on — while the moisture doing the harm sits behind a seal no grain can get past.

Is a drive out of a fire worth posting?

Often, yes. An alloy body holds the platters, and cooked electronics are simply parts to swap. What makes a job hard is a casing pulled out of shape, or soot that has worked past the breather filter. Post it in the state you found it: sealed, uncleaned, and with no attempt at power.

Ought I to dry it out first?

No, and we are aware that runs against instinct. As the water evaporates it leaves behind everything it was carrying, baked onto the contacts and down into the seams of the casing. So bag it wet, and it should still be wet when an engineer opens that bag here.
