It Landed on the Floor and Still Sounds Right.

Halfway through a backup, a shelf bracket over a desk in Didcot worked loose, and the My Book underneath it went to the floor with both leads still attached. On it sat a laboratory technician's whole family video collection — camcorder tapes transferred over years. Nothing about the drive seemed wrong afterwards: it starts up just like it always has, no odd sounds at all, and Windows still cheerfully offers Eject My Book. What never appears at all is a drive letter.

What actually caused it.

Four things have to work, in order, before a drive letter turns up: heads and motor, then the little board bridging USB to SATA, then the partition map, then the filesystem. Here the first two were fine — the disk reached speed and announced itself — so the chain had stopped at the third. A write cut off mid-flow leaves precisely that: sound mechanics with damaged records above them. Enclosures like this one add a further rule. The small board does the decrypting, so it travels to the bench with its disk and never leaves it. Split the pair and every sector you copy is meaningless.

What the bench did.

Test the mechanism before trusting anything

Sounding right proves nothing whatever. Start-up current, the read rate of each head, both defect tables, the reallocation counters — all of it was measured, and not one figure sat outside where it belonged. Twenty minutes with the meters converted a worrying job into a routine one.

Image it with the board left where it is

On a My Book the key sits in that small USB board, so the imaging was done through it — board in the chain between disk and imager — and it came off cleanly from sector zero. Take the bare disk out and hang it on a SATA port and what you end up with is a flawless copy of something unusable: every byte there, and none of it meaning anything.

Repair the image, and leave the disk untouched

Seen from the copy, the damage was both recent and minute — one partition entry left half-written in the instant the unit came off the shelf. Repair work was done on the image. Nothing at all was written back to the original, and the volume mounted first time with its folders and timestamps where they belonged.

What went back.

Not a single file was missing; counted off the image, every folder held what it claimed to. Disk and bridge were treated as one object throughout, from the opening measurement to the closing one, and with hardware built like this, keeping the pair together is most of the job.

The short version: Sounding normal after a knock is reassurance, not a diagnosis. Have it on the meters before it writes another byte. Post it exactly as it is: measuring costs you nothing, a single drive is £300 + VAT, and the figure is agreed in writing before any work begins.
