The disk lifts out and goes onto a write-blocked bench port, and a few minutes later one question is settled: has the computer failed, or the drive inside it? Where the computer is at fault the job drops to a plain copy, which costs less than a recovery.

A disk that still turns is imaged before anything else is attempted. Where the heads have worn out, the lid comes off under filtered air and a donor stack goes in, matched for model and for production batch, and every step afterwards runs on that image. Your own drive is not written to at any stage of the job.

A tired 2.5in disk out of an EasyNote gets read in brief runs with a rest between them, and the awkward ground waits its turn until the easy reading is done. Work like that runs into days. What comes off is then opened here — documents, photographs, mailboxes — rather than counted in a listing.

You see the file list first, then decide. Nothing is invoiced until you have said yes, and on most jobs there is no fee at all if the data does not come back. What we pull off goes onto media bought in for your job, and the postage home is ours. The case stays open on the bench until you tell us the files open on your own machine.

What goes wrong most often

  • The machine is almost never the thing worth saving — what you want sits on the disk, and the disk is a standard 2.5in or 3.5in SATA drive that lifts out in minutes. Posting a whole tower costs more, risks more in transit, and adds nothing at all to what can be recovered from it.
  • Age is the fault — a disk turning since the machine was new carries a great many hours, and worn heads read a little less each month. Slow start-ups, a fan working harder and files that take longer to open are one symptom rather than three, and none of them improve on their own.
  • Repair shops write to the very thing you need — a reinstall, a repair pass or a repeated drive test all put fresh writes onto a disk that is already struggling. If a shop has had it, tell us what was run and whether your original drive was kept. That answer shapes the job more than anything else you can tell us.
  • An old machine often holds live work — the ones arriving here are running a business as often as not: the accounts, the diary, twenty years of photographs, the only copy of the scanned paperwork. That is why they earn the bench time, and why the free look is worth taking before anybody writes the machine off.

Where this one stops: a worn disk with scoring on the platters has lost whatever those tracks held, and nothing brings back what has stopped being on the surface, whatever a laboratory charges to attempt it. A disk that has been reinstalled onto, or formatted and then used for a month, has permanently lost part of itself — and you are told which parts, in a list, before you pay anything. BitLocker or a maker's own encryption needs its password or key from you. We take no phones and no tablets. Most jobs carry no fee at all where the files do not come back, and the answer either way reaches you by telephone at no cost.

An iMedia tower with two disks, and the accounts on the wrong one

A carpenter working out of a spare room in Tilehurst ran the accounts and the family photographs on one iMedia tower. It had been stopping at the logo for a week, and then it stopped for good. Two disks were inside — the original 500GB system drive and a 1TB drive added later — and nobody could say which held what, so both were copied before either was opened. The system disk read straight through. The second had a worn band near the outer edge, taken in short passes with the difficult tracks kept until last. Ninety-eight per cent came back, and the report names the handful of photographs that did not.

Answers before you commit to anything.

The machine is fifteen years old. Is it even worth recovering?

The age of the computer has almost nothing to do with it. The question is the disk, and disks from that period are ordinary work here. What decides it is what is on the drive and what rebuilding it would cost you in time. The look settles that and costs nothing: you get a list of what will come back and one fixed figure beside it before anything chargeable starts. A fair number turn out to be a plain copy, and copies cost less than recoveries.

A shop said the hard drive had failed and fitted a new one. What now?

Ask for the old drive back today, and let nobody else test it. Your files are on the disk that came out, not on the one that went in, and every further diagnostic pass over a worn drive spends a little more of the surface. Send us the original in an antistatic bag. If somebody has reinstalled Windows onto that same disk instead, say so plainly — it changes what can be reached, and we would rather tell you that for nothing than after an invoice.

Do you want the whole computer, or only the drive?

Only the drive. A tower or a laptop adds weight, postage and risk to the parcel and nothing whatever to the work, and the disk lifts out in a couple of minutes — one panel on most EasyNotes, a couple of screws in an iMedia. If you would rather not open it yourself, ring and an engineer will walk you through the couple of screws involved. An external drive may travel in its own case, and a network box may be sent whole.

How much is it, and how long does it take?

£300 + VAT covers a single drive, which is what nearly every Packard Bell job turns out to be, and that band is published here rather than held back until you ask. The look before it is free, the figure arrives in writing, and where the files do not come back, most jobs carry no fee whatever. Three to four working days is normal from the parcel landing to it going home on fresh media, and the postage home is ours.
