The Disk Was Fine All Along.

When she closed her practice, a physiotherapist in Woodley moved the whole of her scanned client archive onto an Iomega drive that was then about a year old. The unit still powers up. The light comes on and I can hear the thing turning, she said. Yet no machine anywhere will admit that a drive is attached. A shop took a look and got nowhere. She left that counter having fixed on the bleakest reading available, and she said so plainly: the disc inside has broken.

What actually caused it.

That plastic box contains two products with wildly different lifespans. At the back sits a plain SATA disk, identical to the one in any desktop tower. At the front sits a small board translating SATA into USB, built down to the lowest cost and cooled by whatever air wanders past. A unit that powers up, hums and appears nowhere therefore puts suspicion in a set order: bridge first, then firmware, then the mechanism. A broken platter is bottom of that list. Diagnosis exists to test the frightening explanation, not to agree with it.

What the bench did.

Undo four screws, put the disk on a port

Out came four screws, and the Seagate Barracuda inside went straight onto a bench SATA port. Her theory lasted about thirty seconds: the drive spun up, named itself in full, declared its proper capacity and took vendor commands without hesitating. The worrying noise was a healthy drive resonating through thin plastic.

Read the logs before ringing her back

A drive can look well and still be quietly on its way out, so nothing was said on the telephone until two figures had been read off the disk itself: reallocated sectors, and the grown defect list. On a disk that age, never worked hard, neither number held a surprise. Sample reads across every zone returned at the first attempt, without a single retry.

Full-speed image, then find the cause

The image came off clean at the drive's rated speed, first sector to last — nothing coaxed, no retries, no new defects. Which left one component to carry the blame: the bridge board had failed with age, while the disk behind it simply carried on working.

What went back.

Scans were opened from every year her practice traded, and not one was short of anything. The recovery went back to her on new media. Her old Seagate now lives in a better enclosure and does light duty as the second copy. Broken platters have not been mentioned since.

The short version: The frightening explanation is rarely the correct one. In an external this old, the component that fails is nearly always the bridge board; what sits behind it usually still works. Post it in and let us settle which of the two you have: nothing to pay for the look, £300 + VAT for a single drive, and the figure in writing before anything starts.
