The Beep Never Changed. The Capacity Changed Every Time.
A LaCie d2 under a desk in a Newbury studio held four terabytes of finished mixes — bands, choirs and live sessions, years of them — until the morning the platters would not turn and a beep arrived in their place. What actually caused it.
None of what a drive says about itself is stored in its electronics. Model string, capacity, the defect tables — all of that lives in service areas written onto the discs, unreachable for as long as the discs sit still. So a drive that will not spin has no honest answer to give. It makes one up instead, a different one each time you ask, and no version of it will ever mount. That beeping through the case is the same deadlock made audible: the motor pulls hard, the pack does not move, a pause, then another pull. Nine times in ten the obstruction is a head stack that has settled onto a platter instead of parking out on its ramp.

What the bench did.
The beep had already narrowed it down
The easy answers had gone before the parcel was posted: two leads, a spare dock, a colleague's Mac, and the same beep from every one of them. That puts the fault inside the case rather than around it. Metering the draw on the bench settled the rest — about two seconds of hard pull while the spindle worked at a pack that never turned, then protection dropping the supply, then the whole sequence again.
Heads off, sliders checked, imager already waiting
Under filtered air the stack lifted away to its ramp, and every slider went under the microscope. The platters were clean — no marking anywhere — which is luck, not something to assume before the lid is off. Power went back on and the drive introduced itself properly: 6TB, the model string it should have had all along, the firmware revision we expected. The imager was configured and waiting, so the copy started immediately.
The power stayed on until the copy finished
A pack that has bonded once cannot be relied on to start a second time, so the power stayed up from the first spin to the last sector and the whole image came off in one session. The drive was boxed again the moment we had that image verified. Volume repair, folder structure and file checks then ran on the copy alone.
What went back.
Four terabytes went home on new media, with the filenames, the dates and the folder tree all intact. It worked because the drive was unplugged after one beep and nobody sat there trying again. No slider was ever dragged across a recording, so every mix comes back sounding as it did the day it was finished.
