Plug It In, and Everything on the Computer Freezes.
In Woodley it had turned into a routine. Plug that Seagate in and the PC seizes up with every light still on, and stays that way until you pull the lead out
. Half-drawn folder windows would set solid on screen, and the moment the lead came out the machine was itself again. Eight years of interviews recorded by a Woodley history group sat on the disk, and a whole Sunday went on getting one folder across before the drive quit altogether. That answered the only question he really had: the interviews are on it right enough, it just will not hand them over

What actually caused it.
The PC was never the problem. Storage requests get served in order, one behind another, and this disk sat at the front of that queue and would not move: a drive that stops answering makes Windows wait out a timeout, then wait out the next one after the request has been repeated, while everything queued behind it simply waits too. That is why a spreadsheet with no connection to the Seagate set solid along with the rest. The folder he did manage to move on the Sunday answered what mattered most — the filing structure was intact, and the recordings really were on there. Nothing was erased here. The disk had lost the ability to hand anything over, and that was all.

What the bench did.
Stop using up what remains
The counters had settled it before anything else was tried: reallocation was well down the road, and the pending list grew longer each time the disk was asked again. So Sunday's folder was borrowed rather than recovered — dragged out of a mechanism that was already working far past what it had left to give. From there, the one thing worth doing was cutting the power to it.
Nothing on the disk gets to hold up the copy
Settings first: the timeouts cut short, two attempts per address, and anything still refusing went into the log so the run could move on. Good areas came off at full speed. The awkward addresses were saved for a final pass, worked a head at a time in short sittings — the pace a tired mechanism can still keep, and the reason the rest of the archive was never put at risk.
Then watch every minute of it
Nothing here was signed off on a file count, because a file of exactly the right size can still hold a stretch of silence the platter never handed back. Every interview got played instead. The image mounted at the first attempt, eight years of recordings came up in the order the group had made them, and each one ran from start to finish before the case closed.
What went back.
All the folders came across, the half-copied one included, and all of them passed the listening test. Out went the archive on fresh media, with a second set for the group's secretary. The Seagate is out of service. Since it went, the PC has troubled nobody.
