It Mounts in a Second, and the Window Is Empty.

A cupboard in Caversham held the Elements, which came out monthly to copy the household machine — the camcorder tapes after we put them on the computer, the school photos, and every document this house has. That Sunday it spun up the way it always did, mounted inside a second or two, and then showed them not one folder — twenty years of things, and an empty window. By then a member of the household had already run chkdsk across it.

What actually caused it.

On an NTFS volume, names and contents live apart. The master file table holds every name; the data itself lies spread over the platters, exactly where it was written. Damage the table and the listing empties without a single byte of any file moving. A write cut short will do it. So will a partition entry misplaced by a few sectors. So will an unlucky run of weak sectors. Which is why a drive that mounts at once and then shows you nothing is usually an accounting failure and not a mechanical one. Before quoting a figure, two questions had to be answered: whether the disk could be read safely, and what chkdsk had already changed.

What the bench did.

Prove the hardware, then turn to NTFS

Nothing substantial was read until the drive had answered a short set of firmware questions: SMART history, remapped sector count, and both defect lists, primary and grown. The answers were clean throughout. That matters commercially as well as technically — a sound mechanism can be imaged at speed instead of nursed along on salvage settings, and the price reflects it.

Image it first; repair only the copy

Repair tools alter what they are pointed at, and one had already run here once. So the original was read once and then left alone, and every step afterwards happened on the image. Viewed that way, the damage sat in a single continuous band. NTFS also mirrors its earliest and most important records, and that mirror had come through almost untouched.

Give the unnamed files an order somebody can use

Entries chkdsk had removed outright left their files to declare themselves. JPEG, MP4, PDF and Office signatures were picked straight out of the clusters, each file was sorted first by format and then by the date stamped inside it, and what came out was a set a household can work through in an evening rather than several thousand numbered items.

What went back.

Nothing was missing. Every scanned document, every school photograph, every transferred tape was there. Most of it kept its own name and its own folder; the rest was sorted by format and date. It travelled home on a fresh drive with a single piece of advice: the only copy should not sit beside the machine it is copying. The job fell in the published £300 + VAT band, in writing before it started.

The short version: A drive nobody has opened for two decades is a hope, not a backup. Look inside it once a year, and if the window ever comes up empty, image it before you believe it.
