Four Maxtor families, and how each one fails.

DiamondMax, the desktop lineThe 3.5in disks that went into towers by the million, PATA first and SATA afterwards. Most of what arrives here is one of these, pulled from a machine retired years ago and kept because nobody was certain what was on it. Age rather than use is what has generally done the damage.
MaXLine, built to be left runningThe near-line range, sold for duty that never stops and often found in small servers and early network boxes. They ran for years without complaint, which is precisely why nobody replaced them, and the ones reaching this bench carry hours no desktop disk would ever see.
MobileMax, and the external casesThe 2.5in mechanisms out of laptops, and the OneTouch, M3 and D3 Station shells that were bought as a backup and became the only copy. Where a case has stopped appearing, the small board inside it is a likelier culprit than the disk behind it, and that is a cheaper job.

No computer comes near it yet. The disk is photographed, the model number and firmware revision are copied off the label, and it gets a short spell on a bench supply while an engineer listens to what it does. A tick, a rattle, a whine and a clean spin all mean different things. Anything that ticks goes straight back off.

Stuck heads, or a motor that will not turn

Which of the two it is decides the job. Stuck heads mean the lid comes off under filtered air and a matched stack goes in — same family, same firmware revision, a close batch. A seized motor means the platters move across to a donor body, aligned as one set, and that is the fussiest work this bench does. Either way the read that follows is slow.

The list first, then the bill, then the files

You see the file list first, then decide. Nothing is invoiced until you have said yes, and on most jobs there is no fee at all if the data does not come back. What we pull off goes onto media bought in for your job, and the postage home is ours. The case stays open on the bench until you tell us the files open on your own machine.

What goes wrong most often

  • These disks fail from standing, not from use — a Maxtor that has been in a drawer since the office was refitted has stiff lubricant, heads settled on the coating and capacitors that have dried out. None of it shows until the drive is asked to turn, and every go costs a little more of the surface.
  • Three or four goes is the usual damage — nearly every Maxtor that reaches us has been switched on again and again by somebody hoping the next attempt is different. It seldom is, and by then a mechanical job has become a mechanical job with wear on top. Stop at the first unfamiliar noise.
  • PATA is not a complication — a forty-pin ribbon and a jumper block put most Maxtors outside what a modern PC will even plug into, which is why so many arrive after a shop has said no. Old interfaces are ordinary work here and they add nothing to the price.
  • Read the label out to us — model number, firmware revision and the code beside them. On a head job a donor has to match the family and sit close in the production run, so the search starts while the parcel is still travelling. Where the disk sits inside an external case the label cannot be seen, so read us what the shell says and we will work the rest out.

What comes back, and what does not. Nearly all of this is routine. Worn heads are replaced, a seized motor is worked around, and a slow mechanism will read in the end if it is given the hours. Coating damage is the blunt part. A head dragged over a platter leaves scoring behind it, and a scored track holds nothing whatever — no lab retrieves what is no longer physically on the disk, whatever the advertising says. Overwriting behaves the same way: format a drive, use it for a month, and a share of what was there has gone permanently. Hardware encryption needs its password from you. No phones and no tablets. On most jobs, where the files do not come back there is no fee at all, and a no comes to you by phone at no charge.

A DiamondMax that had not turned for six years

A joinery firm on the Headley Road estates in Woodley wanted seven years of job files off a tower that had sat in the stores since the office was refitted. Inside was a 250GB DiamondMax, and it managed one short spin before it stopped. Nothing more was asked of it: the lid came off under filtered air, a matched head stack went in, and the first pass took the whole surface at a crawl with the weakest tracks kept until last. Every sector came off. Three days, parcel to parcel, and the drawings and invoices went home on a new disk in the folders the old machine had them in.

It has been in a cupboard for years. Will it still read?

Usually, and the first spin-up decides most of it — so let that spin-up be ours. A disk left standing has stiff lubricant, heads resting on the coating and a motor that either turns or does not. Repeated goes are what turn a whole recovery into a partial one. Send it unpowered. The free look tells you whether the lid has to come off, and one fixed figure reaches you in writing before anything chargeable starts.

The disk says Maxtor and the paperwork says Seagate. Which is it?

Both, and it makes no odds to the work. Seagate took on Maxtor, kept the name on external drives for years afterwards, and the mechanisms inside came from whichever line was running at the time. What counts on the bench is the model number and firmware revision printed on the label, because a head stack has to come from the same family and a close production run. Read those out over the telephone and the donor search begins while your parcel is still in the post.

It spins up, clicks a few times, then stops. Is that the end of it?

No. What that pattern tells you is that the heads cannot settle. It tells you nothing about the platters, where everything you wrote is still sitting untouched. It does mean that each further attempt drags worn heads across the coating, and scoring is the one kind of damage nobody reverses. Pull the plug at the wall, then leave the drive alone. Opening a Maxtor and fitting matched heads is routine work here, priced in writing before it begins.

What do I send, and where does it go?

The drive, not the computer. An external may travel in its own case with the mains adapter; a disk out of a tower goes into an antistatic bag inside a padded box, with nothing pressing on the board. A NAS unit can be sent whole. There is no collection and no counter, so post it tracked and insured for what the files are worth to you, to the intake-lab address set out on the contact page. We take no phones and no tablets.
